Queensland set to exempt eligible medical practices from Payroll tax

Further to our previous article on the Payroll Tax implications for entities running medical practice centres, both the Queensland Labor party and the LNP have made announcements as to what the future holds for the so called ‘patients tax’ if they are elected.

Both parties have committed to exempting GP practices from payroll tax on payments to general practitioners contracted by the medical practice when the Payroll Tax Amnesty for GPs ends on 30 June 2025. As outlined in our earlier update, this amnesty is available for eligible medical practices in respect of payments made to GPs from medical centres during the financial years from 1 July 2017 until 30 June 2025.

If implemented, this decision would see Queensland become the first state or territory in Australia to permanently exempt GP practices for these payments to contracted general practitioners.

Whilst this bipartisan Queensland election pledge is good news for our clients who are eligible for the exemption, the issue remains for all other practitioners who are not GPs.

We will provide further updates as they become available.
